Topic: Health Coaching for Behaviour Change: Skills Development Programme Programme Overview

This is a two day programme – you must attend both days to complete the course (by booking on day one you are automatically booked for day two)

This workshop will give you the opportunity to build on the many skills you already possess and specifically to learn how a coaching approach can very usefully support your work with patients. The course has been developed to introduce people to a coaching approach, with an emphasis on how and when to use coaching with patients. It provides participants, with no previous coaching experience, an opportunity to learn the basics of health coaching and understand how coaching can support conversations that facilitate self-care and improve patient satisfaction.

Why attend this course?

Long-term and chronic conditions already pose significant challenges for healthcare. With current trends around nutrition and lifestyle likely to become more pronounced in the future, these issues will only increase. As health practitioners, we often only have ten or so minutes to deliver impact; compared to the 7,000 or so waking minutes in an average week during which patients make the key decisions that affect their health.

In the context of these challenges, information and prescription is not enough. We need to be able to leverage the contact we do have to motivate and foster responsibility in patients for their own healthcare, in short, we need to make, “every contact count”. This is where coaching skills come in. There is growing evidence globally which attests to the effectiveness of coaching approaches for delivering increased responsibility and behaviour change on the part of patients.

Speaker : Dr Deborah Neal, Consultant Physiotherapist, Training and Evaluations, Symphony
