Message from the SGPET Vice Chair (Dr Ian Boyland) - Once again SGPET education events are proving extremely popular and the combination of in person and virtual attendance seems to be popular. We are also improving in our tech knowledge and ability to do this. At the Cancer Study Day in January we are going to be trialing some new tech that should make the online experience more interactive and rely less on me pressing the right buttons!
With a return to events selling out we are once again having reserve lists. We continue to restrict the numbers attending in person to maintain social distancing and will slowly increase the number able to attend online as the tech and our skills improve. Can we remind people that if they are unable to attend that they contact the office to let them know, especially people intending to attend in person. We have had a significant number not attend recently which means others are missing out. We realise that at the moment there may be sudden changes in circumstances but would appreciate where possible that we are informed in advance so that those on the reserve list are able to be contacted.
Thank you for bearing with us during this time of innovation and please give us feedback or ideas on how the experience can be improved.
- Menopause and HRT Formulary Update - The Medicines Management Team wanted to make accessing all the options available in an easy to read reference using quick reference pictograms, please find those and links to further resources including the use of Testosterone in the menopause and a helpful Medicines Supply Tool on our new guidance page here

Friday Forums – A few spaces still left on Friday 19th November “The assessment and management of patients who present with capacity issues”
Have you ever …
-been unsure how to assess someone’s capacity?
-got stuck with a patient for a long time because it was unclear if they had capacity or not?
-got stuck with a patient for a long time when they declined to follow your advice?
-got a little frustrated when in spite of your best efforts patients have made decisions that we deem to be unwise?
If you answered yes to any of the above, then this session will help you consult more effectively, and hopefully reduce your stress levels too
All clinicians welcome, the session will be delivered virtually between 09.30 – 12.30 and will be facilitated by Dr Andy Eaton (GP & Training Hub Fellow) – all clinicians welcome. To book a place please email ellen.welch2@nhs.net

Somerset New To Practice General Practice Fellowship Programme for Newly Qualified GPs: Are you or do you know a GP that has qualified since May 2021 and is/will be working in Somerset? If so, this funded fellowship programme may be of interest. It is a 2 year programme designed to provide personalised support to newly qualified GPs to help gain confidence and to develop enjoyable, fulfilling and sustainable careers in general practice. NHSE/I are aiming for a 100% uptake and nearly all of our Somerset GPs have joined. We started in April 21 and currently have 24 fellows, so you may already have one of our them working in your practice! We have had great feedback, and one of the highlights is the benefit of the mentoring, appreciation of paid time ( £10,000 pro rata per annum) to undertake your chosen CPD or interests plus online monthly Thursday lunchtime 30 minutes session with various speakers. Example topics include know about appraisals, PCN overview, lifestyle medicine, managing difficult blood results on a Friday afternoon and time management. It is also wonderful to see the development of peer groups forming throughout Somerset, and I really hope this continues beyond our fellowship. This programme continues to evolve according to the needs and aspirations of our fellows. Our next cohort will start in April 2022. See programme here. If you would like to find out more or apply, please contact Dr Catherine Ievers catherine.ievers1@nhs.net
