NEWS/UPDATE BOARD - This and past updates can be found here
- Friday Forums - Friday 22nd October- The Assessment and Management of Hypertension in Primary Care
- 10-footsteps live well with pain course - Following the first session of our 10 footsteps livewellwithpain course we thought we’d highlight a couple of useful resources for you to check out:
- Louise lives with pain and was one of our trainers. Her story is inspirational. It will inspire you to view pain management in a different way. Louise told us she wished her clinicians had consistently told her right from the start that the medications aren’t the long term solution. On average we need to repeat the message 7 times before it starts to impact.
- The pain cycle is a really helpful tool to go through with patients. It’s also a great tool for us to to help us manage pain. It’s worth thinking: where is the patient in the cycle and how can we best support them (often through social prescribing, shared lived experience and talking therapies)?
- When initiating opioid meds (and consider for other analgesics also), remember to give short scripts of no more than 7 days and aim not to put on repeat. Longer prescriptions lead to higher risk of long term use with all of the pitfalls. As teams, consistency in prescribing is really important to help set expectations and guide people along the best route for them.
- COVID Webinar - On 4th November and 17th November 2021 the regional Long COVID team will be hosting a webinar aimed at all non-clinical staff (including social prescribers). It will help practices meet the requirements of the new Long Covid DES which states: “Practice staff are required to have the knowledge, as appropriate to their role, to identify, assess, refer and support patients with Long COVID” The webinars are 1-2pm and will cover the same topics. Those topics will include:
- What is long covid?
- How are patients presenting with the condition?
- Post-covid assessment services
- How can non-clinical teams support with long covid?
- Managing patient expectations

For Health care support workers employed within primary care who are thinking of progressing in to a nursing associate. There is a funded online course which will help prepare them with progressions into a nursing associate role. It has lots of study skills, information about NA role and some leadership/coaching in it.
There are two cohort dates in November available, and places are limited so I advise that anyone interested applies straightaway. Anyone wanting to apply must use the code CC-X209A-4219 in order for the cost to become free. More details about the course and to register www.educationforhealth.org/dpp

Advanced Practice (AP) Annual Funding Opportunity from March 2022 - Health Education England have announced that as of March 2022 they will run an annual cycle for submissions of expressions of interest (EOI) for AP funding across the SW. There will be only one opportunity to apply each year and it will be at system level and not for individuals to apply. More information will be sent out as it becomes available. This is just giving practices and PCNs the 'heads up'. The Training Hub will be happy to receive any early EOIs by email to: Somersetlmc.sth.office@nhs.net

CPD funding - Access to Upskilling Modules and Courses - We are aware there is difficulty gaining access to modules at UWE. Remember: now that the CPD funding sits with practices and PCNs, staff can apply to any Higher Education Institute (HEI)/University, or College, or on-line education provider. There are similar modules to UWE available at Plymouth and Bournemouth universities so please search their websites. These links may be of some help for those seeking Advanced Practice Modules: Bournemouth: Research Methods for Health and Social Care - This unit is part of the MSc Health Research, but it can also be used towards the MA Advanced Practice.
