Somerset GP Education Trust, SGPET, is an initiative by Somerset LMC and the Somerset GP Education team to support Somerset GPs with their ongoing education and professional development.

For 2010/11 membership remains £75.00 and represents very good value. Members will be able to attend all SGPET organized educational meetings free of charge and these will include:

GP Refresher Courses - the well established Fresh Looks at Taunton in November and a new three day course in Yeovil in March. Cost to non members attending Fresh Looks for five days - £250.00

Monthly evening meetings in Ilminster, Taunton, Minehead, Wells or Yeovil discussing typical case scenarios and your questions with a local consultant. Cost to non members £20.00

A series of half day workshops about urgent care. Cost to non members £30.00

Multi-disciplinary study days - 2010 will cover Mental Health on May 27th at Dillington House. Cost to non members up to £60.00.

Occasional meetings throughout the year covering topics from Child Protection to Looking after Yourself, from Injecting Joints to Care Planning. Cost to non members £10.00 per hour.

Members will also be able to get practical help and support with:

Realising the PDPs arising out of their appraisal, running successful practice-based learning programmes, and preparing for revalidation. Future revalidation will require 50 hrs of certificated education a year. All SGPET meetings will have Deanery accreditation

Where all the GPs in a practice are members then:

The practice manager and practice nurses will be able to attend relevant SGPET meetings free of charge.

SGPET is one of a number of similar GP Education trusts in the Severn area and our members will have:

Reciprocal arrangements with the GP education trusts in Bath, Bristol, Gloucester and Swindon. This will give SGPET members access to educational meetings in these trust areas as if they are members there. Most activities will then be free but some more specialized events can incur costs and/or have limited space.

These are challenging times for general practice and the support from colleagues and the LMC and the benefits of learning can help us considerably.

Somerset GP Education Trust aims to be an important part of general practice life in Somerset. The LMC and the education team are working hard to ensure this and your support and membership are important.
